Surfing an Alaia: The Differences Between San Diego and Hawaii

Surfing Swami's in San Diego just once has got me excited to get a few of my Alaias up here from Hawaii. I don't think I'd say that San Diego's waves are better or worse for alaias but there are a few benefits. First the waves are a lot rollier here. That can be good for surfing alaias because you don't have to worry as much about making drops on your take offs...something that's an obstacle on most every wave in Hawaii. Second, the waves in southern California (at some breaks anyway) are a bit longer and easier to just cruise on. Hawaii tends to be more bowly and fast. This is great once you're used to it but especially when learning how to ride an alaia, bowly and fast can mean difficult.

On the down side of rolly San Diego waves, they're a bit harder to catch. Surfing an alaia in San Diego is going to be tons of fun once you're up and riding on the right wave, but catching them may prove a little challenging.

I really enjoyed surfing my alaias back home in Hawaii at breaks like Pupukea, Turtle Bay, Chuns (some of the more mellow breaks on the north shore) and loved the power and speed behind the waves but it'll be interesting to see how these easier drops and rolly waves feel. Hawaii makes you extra picky on the waves you go for with an alaia. For one, the drops are typically steeper and therefore harder with an alaia. But even after you've made the drop Hawaiian waves remain more critical than San Diego's (in most but not all spots). In the end, surfing an alaia in Hawaii is rewarding when you get a good wave but probably a bit more challenging.

Not that this article is going to make you buy a plane ticket to Hawaii or San Diego to surf your alaia, but it may give you an idea of what to expect when you're riding your alaia in either place.

Either way, I'm anxious to get my alaias up to San Diego to try out the rolliness up here.

A Unique Experience on the Big Island of Hawaii

As Frommers quoted, "this was one of those "unique Hawaii experiences" that you will remember long after your tan has faded. The ranch is an 8,500 acre working ranch. It sits at 3,200 foot in elevation on the slopes of the Kohala Mountains. "An Evening at Kahua Ranch" is a night under the stars with wonderful food, great entertainment, fun activities, and storytelling around a traditional campfire.

The folks from Kahua picked us up at our resort and we rode in the air-conditioned van, as we enjoyed the scenic coastline. Our guide shared stories about the history and culture of the area. We were personally greeted by the ranch owner, John Richards. When the sun starts to sink, we sat around the campfire looking into the Pacific and Haleakala Mountain on Maui in the distance. John talked about how cattle ranching came to Hawaii and how they manage the ranch in the 21st century. All the time we were sipping on locally brewed Kona beer. They also offered complimentary wine or soft drinks .

The meal was a traditional ranch -style barbecue of sirloin steak, chicken, locally grown potatoes, Waimea corn-on-the-cob, baked beans, Big Island green salad, Kona coffee, and dessert is served shortly after sunset.

After dinner the fun and games begin: The music starts and line dancing gets going on the dance floor, and several paniolo (cowboy) activities take place. You can try your hand at roping, play a game of horse shoes, or trying your hand at branding a cedar shingle. The stargazing was my favorite part. We saw Jupiter and the rings of Saturn through a monstrous telescope.

Every few years, it happens. The surfs in Waimea Bay Beach Park reach higher than 20 feet. The competitors in the Quicksilver Big Wave Invitational in Memory of Eddie Aiku ready their surf boards and paddle out for a ride of those monstrous waves.

The Quicksilver Big Wave or "The Eddie" is one of its kind. Named after the legendary surfer and North Shore Oahu's first lifeguard, the tournament was only held 7 times since 184 due to the condition that the waves should be 20 feet or bigger in Waimea Bay. The last tournament was held in December 2004 during which the waves reached as high as 50 feet.

Waimea Bay Beach Park has been ranked among the top 10 big wave surf spots in the world. Undeniably so--- when the surf is up, waves here can go up from 12 feet to 30 feet and more. However, the surf breaks big only a few times a year. Diamond Head is Honolulu's landmark of Hawaii, and probably Hawaii's most recognizable symbol. It dominates southern Oahu and looms over the beaches of Waikiki.

Diamond Head might be just another extinct volcano, but it's also the best place to orient see the breathtaking landscape of Oahu's southern reaches. From the top of Diamond Head all of Honolulu and beyond is laid out for you. The coast, the beaches, the other landmarks, like Pearl Harbor and downtown, the neighborhoods, valleys and ridges. And because it's so close to Waikiki's hotels, it's a very popular hiking activity. The hike up is less than a mile and takes less than two hours.

It's all part of Diamond Head State Park and it's easy to get to. Just take TheBus (#58) from Waikiki or drive down Kalakaua Avenue to Monsarrat, by the Honolulu Zoo. This turns into Diamond Head Road. Tell the bus driver you'd like to get off at Diamond Head's entrance.

Go in through the little tunnel entrance. There's a parking lot, an info center, rest rooms, and a little kiosk. The trail up brown and dusty Diamond Head starts here.

The hike up to the top starts with a walk across the floor of the volcano, and then the trail becomes gradually steeper and rocky, which winds its way up to the first lookout and half-way point. This might take about 20-30 minutes, and from here you can see the Windward Coast of Oahu. But the best is yet to come.

After you climb a concrete stairway you'll come to a 225-foot tunnel that's cut into the mountainside. It's a good place to get out of the sun for a few minutes and get ready for the next flight of stairs.

On the other side of the tunnel is another flight of steps, slightly longer than the first, but after that you're practically there. Actually, the lowest level of the Fire Control Station Diamond Head. Go up the spiral stairs to the top of the station and you can exit to the observation station at the summit of Diamond Head. Straight ahead is the broad blue Pacific, the green slopes of the Koolaus, all of Honolulu and beyond, as well as a bird's eye view of Waikiki.

Stay, take lots of pictures, have a light snack and some water. Re-apply your sunscreen and revel in the moment. After your hour or so hike up, your 30-45 minutes trip down will be much, much easier. But watch the time: The gates close shut at 6pm.

Diamond Head State Park is open from 6-6 all year. There's a $1 admission for walk-ins, or $5 per carload. If you want to try and avoid the tour groups, come early in the morning or after one'ish in the afternoon.

Bring comfortable walking shoes, water, sunscreen, a sunhat, a camera and a friend. A flashlight is handy for the tunnels, and you could use a towel to help block the sun, fan yourself, or wipe down your face with some cool water. And binoculars would come in really handy.

A Hawaii Fishing Vacation

I really didn’t need a cup of coffee. Yet I find myself here, at Starbucks, across the University of Seattle, with coffee in hand wondering if there’s anything fun that can come out of today.
It seems ironic that we left the “high-eighties” in Hawaii thinking we were headed to the cooler, maybe even rainy, Pacific northwest! Instead we are greeted by temperatures that made what we left seem cool! With some time to kill while the students I accompanied here attend their workshops, it would seem a great opportunity to break away and enjoy the city. Seattle is a wonderful place and the quick drive into town from the airport last night reinforced my appreciation for the impressive architecture, the exciting waterfront, the greenery, and overall charm which I’ve admired on this and each of my two prior visits.
Today, I am in a different mood. It may be that the heat is intense enough to make any sightseeing pursuit more a feat of endurance than a pleasant pastime. Or perhaps I realize that anything that seems exciting…like the run out to Tillicum Village, or exploring the shores of Puget Sound or Lake Washington would only make we wish I had my fishing gear to really enjoy being here. But then, even if I did have my gear, I know neither where to go nor what to do to in these waters that are completely foreign to me!
So, I sit here in Starbucks, where the air-conditioned comfort seems more pleasant than anything else I can think of doing today. My thoughts drift back to my part of the world, Hawaii. I can’t help but wonder how many visitors to the islands are feeling this same, “it’s nice to be here but I’d really be just as happy fishing back at home!” I also wonder how many, like me, go through the tourist “must-dos” and bypass fishing altogether because Hawaii beaches, while great for tanning and swimming, seem just a bit too “foreign” to them!
For the fishing Mecca that Hawaii is, relatively few will do some serious fishing outside of the pricey options that grace the tourist publications that are literally everywhere you turn. The Hawaiians are credited with being the fathers of surfing, and are known to have practiced the sport as early as the 15th century AD. The Hawaiian name for surfing "He'enalu" - can be translated as wave sliding. During its early history, surfing was taken as a sacred practice and only those with a high social status could take part; in other words - Hawaiian kings and queens were surfers. Ironically, today, surfing is seen by the general population as a sport for those who have dropped out of society, the very opposite to how it began.

As a people living on a cluster of small islands in a very big sea, the Hawaiians were not surprisingly fascinated by the ocean, and attached great meaning to its moods and forms. In a similar way to which the Inuit are said to have many names for snow, the Hawaiians also have hundreds of words to describe the various forms of the ever changing sea.

Just as modern day surf bums insist on surfing as a lifestyle rather than just a sport and thus devote great portions of time and money to the pursuit of the waves, Hawaiians also found unfathomable bounds with the practise, as the writings of Kepelino Keauokalani, a 19th Century Hawaiian Scholar, shows in his observations of the local Hawaiian surfers:

"All thought of work is at the end, only that of sport is left. The wife may go hungry, the children, the whole family, but the head of the house does not care. He is all for sport, that is his food. All day there is nothing but surfing. Many go out surfing as early as four in the morning: men, women, children."

Such was the desire of the ancient Hawaiians for wave sliding that if the distant storms didn't generate sufficient waves to ride, surfers with enlist the help of a "kahuna" - a priest who would pray to the gods and ask for surf to come to Hawaiian shores.

However, surfing was to move into a period of decline following the arrival of Christian Missionaries who believed surfing was a hedonist act and a waste of time. They adamantly preach against surfing's existence, and by the late 1800s, the sport had almost been completely exterminated. Had it not been for a few hardcore surfers who continued to practise the sports and Hawaiian kings such as David Kalakau, surfing may have died out all together.

However, the gradual decline of the missionaries influence allowed surfing to breathe again, and by the start of the 1900s, surfing had not only regained its former popularity in Hawaii, but was beginning to spread to other beaches of the world.

By the late 1920s, tourists from all over the world were booking into newly built hotels in Waikiki in their hundreds, all eager to experience the world's most famous beach and see the exotic "surf people" for themselves. Another 30 years on, and waves of American surf migrants began to arrive from California in search of the renowned Hawaiian waves, that had reached legendary status is surf circles.

Big Island, Hawaii Promotes Health & Wellness Travel

Because of the rise in wellness tourism business owners on the Big Island of Hawaii have got together to promote a travel initiative that they collectively hope will prove so successful that it will eventually be adopted by the rest of the state.

The Hawaii Island Wellness Travel Association, composed of 120 business owners and holistic professionals, has set up a meeting with both the Big Island Visitors Bureau and Hawaii County officials to take the initiative further at which they hope to agree marketing strategies, develop effective packaging and adopt a set of rules for health and wellness travel to Hawaii, which they regard as a booming business.

As recently as 2005 almost $50,000 was set aside by Hawaii Tourism Authority to be used to quantify how well wellness tourism could be developed in the archipelago. A leading research company was approached to produce a comprehensive study of the health and wellness tourism market for the state of Hawaii. However, significant progress stalled once the report had been produced, and only now, some two years later, is the idea being re-launched.

One of the most vociferous proponents and advocates of wellness tourism Lew Whitney, co-founder of the Kokolulu Farm and Qigong Center based in North Kohala said: "We've been trying for years to persuade the Hawaii Tourism Authority that this (wellness) offers a great opportunity for the whole state of Hawaii and not just the Big Island." Over the last nine years the Center has offered a range of cancer retreats and meditative healing programs and Whitney admits that it has been a struggle getting the message across to tourism chiefs. However, Whitney highlights that the Center, located on the northern tip of the Big Island, has been successfully trading for almost 10 years, and with little promotional help from the Hawaii Tourism Authority has managed to remain in business, albeit with the help of some charitable contributions.

Indeed, leading research group Mintel produced a comprehensive Market Research document which looked at wellness tourism being offered throughout the world in places as far flung as Japan, Hungary, India, Austria and Thailand. It concluded, amongst other things that markets were expanding as more and more people, of all ages, made their vacation choices based on health and wellness travel demonstrating that that the sector had a bright future.

As more people take to using alternative and natural remedies, tying wellness into hotel deals in Hawaii could herald a bold new initiative that in the long run may well add an extra string to the already well developed tourism bow for the state.

Going to the beach is a big thing in Hawaii, because we are blessed with not only weather consistently gorgeous year round, but also with numerous beautiful beaches on which to enjoy our golden days.

Because our Big Island is geologically quite young and the landscape is immature, our beaches tend to be smaller than those on the older islands, and are therefore all the more precious. What the Big Island has that some of the other islands lack, though, are beaches with spectacularly colored sand. White sand, black sand, green sand and even grey sand.

The creamy white sand beaches of picture postcards and hapa haole songs result from the accumulation of small particles of coral reef and crushed shell fish shells. As the reefs grow, wave and storm action break it into small pieces and many fish, such as the parrot fish, munch the coral whole and spit-out sand sized particles. Other fish, such as the humuhumunukunukuapua'a swallow the coral and sand-size pellets of sandy waste come out their other end. In this way, one coral-eating reef fish can produce up to a ton of white sand a year. Because our white sand beaches result from physical degradation of soft, biological material the sand grains tend to have rounded edges. Thus, unlike sands derived from rock and mineral sources, such as the California beaches, they do not stack well and tend to produce poor sand castles.

Beautiful white sand beaches occur all over the Big Island, but are biggest and best developed on the Kona and Kohala coastlines, as coral reefs prosper best on the lee-side of the island. Prime examples of white sand beaches include Anaeho'omalu, Hapuna, Wailea and Makalawena Beaches. Snorkeling at these white sand beaches is a joy-the water is a brilliant turquoise due to the amount of light reflected back into the water by the sandy shore bottom. However, this sandy bottom itself is relatively barren of life, so if seeing fish is your main snorkeling goal, be sure to choose a beach with a nearby reef, such as Wailea Beach, since the fish live in and around reefs and rocky cliffs.

Black sand beaches are strange and spectacular, and, because of their thermal properties, are warm even on a chilly day (Oh, yes, we do have chilly days here in Hawaii--in mid-winter temperatures can dip into the low 70s and even rarely the upper 60s!). In fact, it is the black sand beaches of the Big Island that are the choice among egg-laying female Hawaiian green sea turtles for laying their egg clutches on, precisely because of their warmth.

Black sand beaches result from the fiery, explosive mix of hot liquid lava entering the ocean. The skin of the lava stream is instantly chilled as it flows into the water and then blasted off when the ocean water flashes to steam. Black sand also results from mechanical action during the natural physical erosion of the basalt (the name for the rock our lava becomes once it cools). You'd think that sand forged in the volcano would be tough and enduring, but in truth, it's very, very fragile and black sand beaches do not last long over time. For this reason, although the sand is beautiful and rare, we ask you not to take any home with you.

Black sand beaches occur all over the island, two of the largest are on the north end of the island, crossing the mouths of Waipi'o and Pololu Valleys, respectively. These are not visited as often as some of the others as both entail something of a hike down into the canyons. What once must have been a heart-achingly beautiful, large black sand beach fronts Hilo Town right on Hilo bay, but much of it has been eroded, polluted and degraded by industrial encroachment or simply paved over as a result of urbanization. By far the most popular black sand beach is at Punalu'u. Not only is the beach lovely, inviting and easily accessible, it's almost guaranteed that the visitor will see Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles basking on this beach. The newest and most vibrant black sand beach is Kaimu Beach at the end of the Kalapana-Kopoho Road, near where the village of Kalapana was engulfed by the volcano a few years ago. Snorkeling at the black sand beaches can be dark and mysterious, as little light is reflected back into the water from the sandy bottom, but the bouldery nature of the off-beach sea floor assures the prospect of abundant life and many reef fish. Be aware...because black sand beaches mostly occur on the youngest, and therefore most exposed, portions of the island, many are characterized by big waves, strong currents and nasty rip tides. Swim only where you see others swimming, and only when a life guard is present.

Wild, surreal, enchanting, the Big Island's green sand beaches are a rare geologic occurrence that appears in only a few choice spots on our island and almost nowhere else in the world. Although they take a little effort to get to, you should not travel all the way to Hawaii and not see these jewel-like beaches.

The green sand is composed almost entirely of the mineral olivine, or peridot as the gem quality crystals are known. These crystals precipitate out of the molten lava while it sits in the magma chamber reservoir before it erupts onto the surface. The liquid lava is melted from rocks at great depth within the earth; the chemical composition of the melt is at equilibrium at extremely high pressures and temperatures. As the magma migrates upward, many miles, through the Earth's crust, it cools and pressure decreases; this causes crystals to precipitate to form in the melt. In magmas world wide, olivine is almost always observed to precipitate out first. Hawaii lavas migrate up to the surface so quickly, and then are expelled from the magma chamber onto the surface so quickly, that they have little time for many crystals to form. But when lava does sit in the magma chamber awhile, the olivine crystals do precipitate, and they slowly settle to the bottom of the melt. As liquid lava begins to erupt onto the surface, much of the olivine is left behind in the residual liquid. Thus, lavas erupted from the latest stages of these magma chambers sometimes are enriched with crystalline olivine. Since late stage magmas are also relatively cooler and less fluid, their eruptions are more explosive and they tend to form more spatter cones than flows. The green sand beaches of the Big Island result where the ocean has breached one or another of these spatter cones, and the winnowing action of the waves has washed away all the particles except for the relatively denser olivine grains.

There are tiny green sand beaches all along the southern coastline on either side of South Point, but the largest and most accessible is Papkolea Beach at South Point, reached by a moderate hike of about 2 ¼ miles along the wild coastline northeast of South Point, following an old 4WD two-track. Once again, due to its rarity and the irreplaceable nature of this resource, we ask that you enjoy our Green Sand beaches, but don't take any sand home with you.

Warm, comfortable and inviting, grey sand beaches result from mixing of black sand particles with white sand along a stretch of beach and as such, are represented by a continuum of grey hues. In fact, many Big Island beaches probably fit more with a definition of grey sand beach than properly occupy either of the two distinct end member compositions, black sand or white sand beach. Ho'okena, Kahalu'u and Honomalino are three of the largest and most popular grey sand beaches on the Big Island.

Then there are the funny sands that are either exceedingly rare or seasonal. Consider one entirely unique beach, Ke-awa-iki, which today is a dominantly black sand beach, but the black sand has incompletely mixed with the older white sand on the southern portion of the beach, leaving a stretch of strange, but oddly artistic, piebald black and white sand. And then there are the pink sands formed during winter when storm-derived deep waves wash and grind-up more coral turning some otherwise white sand beaches absolutely pink; Wailea Beach and Keakaikua beaches are prime examples of this.

first time under a single ruler who would become known as King
Kamehameha the Great. He established the House of Kamehameha, a dynasty
that ruled over the kingdom until 1872. One of the most important
events during those years was the suppression of the Hawaii Catholic
Church. The Newlands Resolution was passed on July 7, 1898, formally
annexing Hawaii as a United States territory. In 1900, it was granted
self-governance and retained Iolani Palace as the territorial capitol
building. In March 1959, both houses of Congress passed the Admission
Act and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law. On June
27 of that year, a plebiscite was held asking residents of Hawaii to
vote on accepting the statehood bill. After statehood, Hawaii quickly

Transport

Flying is the most common way to get to Hawaii's Big Island. Air
travelers are serviced by Kona International Airport (KOA) on the west
side of the island, and Hilo International Airport (ITO) on the east.
National and international carriers offer both direct and non-stop
flights to KOA and ITO.

An alternate method of getting to Hawaii's Big Island is aboard a
cruise ship. Several ships make weekly stops in Hilo Harbor on the East
side, and also generally visit Kailua Bay on the West side.

Different car rental is available for transportation. These car rentals
can be done by the on request to the hotels. The Big Island's public
transportation system, called Hele-On, consists of a main route between
Hilo and Kailua-Kona that operates once a day in each direction, plus

While Hilo is closest to Honokaa, Kapoho, and Volcano, Keahole is in Kailua-Kona, which is closest to all of Kona, Puako, Kohala, Waikoloa, and Waimea. Direct flights exist from the mainland only to Keahole and no ferries from the Big Island (Hawaii) are available to any other island. Although sad, it is true. Furthermore, Lihue Airport (LIH) is the sole airport of Kauai, in Lihue, and some carriers offer direct flights from the mainland. Specifically, Lihue is about halfway to everything on the island-but a bit closer to Poipu than Princeville. Keep in mind that there are no ferries from Kauai to any other island. In addition, Molokai has one airport, Molokai Airport (MKK) which is located in central Molokai. As a visitor you will probably have to take a small airplane in, usually no bigger than 20-seats. You will be able to fly there from Honolulu or Kahului via Island and small commercial boats can transfer you from Maui to Molokai. Moreover, Lanai has one airport, Lanai Airport (LNY), near Lanai City, but it also accepts only small airplanes. Again, Island Air can fly you in from Honolulu and small commercial boats are available for you to take from Maui to Molokai.

Finally, travel agents state that by 2007 Hawaii Super Ferry should be operating between all the islands and will hopefully revolutionize the current expensive and inefficient inter-island travel systems. But until then, you should better book your flight in advance and keep a copy of this article in hand.

The Best Places to Retire in the West

I am pursuing my final career � and I am quite comfortable working a 40-hour schedule for the first time in my life. I take my time and pick my clients carefully.

I get to take a day off here and there for golf, and I travel around the western states every couple of months. Over the past two years I have been keeping an eye out for the perfect spot to retire in the Western US.

I now live in a small community near the Bay Area in Northern California. I've lived here for 20+ years, and it has been great. The Bay Area is vibrant, has a good climate, and is home to some of the most creative people on the planet. But it certainly isn't paradise.

It is an expensive place to live. The highways are congested. The boarders of the US are out of control and that has hit California hard. The government is dysfunctional, and we pay a premium for that. While we have good weather, it is great half the year and somewhat over-rated the other half. My business has changed over the past five years. I can do about 80% - 90% of it from anywhere. That's the beauty of information and communication technology.

Let me share with you what I have found as I looked for better working/ retirement locations in the western US.
- Portland, Oregon area; especially Southern Washington
- Prescott, Arizona
- Northern Baja, Mexico
- Hilo, the big island of Hawaii
- Boise, Idaho

Southern Washington: I recently visited a friend who built his dream house on a few acres in Southern Washington, about 30 minutes from Portland. His 2,500 square foot house cost about the same as a � acre lot in the Bay Area. He is within easy drive of a good airport and Oregon has no sales tax. He can explore the Cascades and reach ocean or skiing in a few hours. Yep � it rains a lot, but not as much as Seattle.

Prescott, Arizona: This gem is home to 30,000 people, who enjoy mountain vistas and a temperate, sunny, four-season climate thanks to its mile-high elevation. If you aren't real fussy, you can find a nice house for $350k. If you are a little fussy or want some land, expect to pay $500k or better. Prescott is an old, established town with historic buildings and strong family culture. It's true that absentee Californians have snapped up a good bit of the real estate up. But they have been are running around most of the west buying spare homes and putting them in the "bank" for future use

Northern Baja, Mexico: Don't write this one off too fast, especially if you are in So Cal. and want a second home near the beach. It is not as crazy as it sounds You can live near the beach in Rosarito and get an absolutely great ocean view or ocean front house for a fraction of the price of a house located two hours north in San Diego county. South of the Border property even has financing available from this side of the border.

Hilo Area on the Big Island: One of the best deals in the United States has been discovered and land prices are climbing rapidly, but guess what? Land in Hilo is still inexpensive. If you are looking for a slow pace, it doesn't get any slower than Hilo. This area is absolutely beautiful yet not a prime location for vacation resorts and condos. Condos on Kauai, Maui, and the other side of the big island run $500 - $750k, yet a Hilo acre lot can be purchased for $40 to $75k, and houses for $150k. If you want some privacy, like to garden, and have dreamed of building a hideaway on an tropical island, there is still time to do it in the USA. It rains almost daily in Hilo but showers are short and the 75 to 80 degrees temperatures makes the showers and lush green growth a real delight.

Boise is rated as the second best city to do business in the US by Forbes Magazine. It has a population of about 400,000, and median house prices around $165,000. Boise is an excellent gateway to the natural beauty of the Northern Rockies. For those of you not quite ready to hang it up, but looking for an interesting, affordable small city environment, Boise deserves your serious consideration.

Hurghada – the property hotspot in the heart of the Egyptian Riviera

But it is Egypt’s ‘Red Sea Riviera’ that is now emerging as one of the world’s tourist and property hot-spots. At its heart is the town of Hurghada, which is now becoming an established resort. As well as a massive increase in tourism in the area, there has also been a proportional increase in investment in residential and commercial property.

It is not just relatively low property prices and costs of development that make this area a potential goldmine for investors, it also benefits from a fantastic climate. Hawaii Island was the home of one of the most prominent figures in the history of the state, King Kamehameha the Great. Born around 1753, Kamehameha is considered one of Hawaii’s greatest leaders. By conquering all the islands and bringing them under one rule, it is believed that this great warrior was actually able to end the warring between the islands by uniting them under one rule with laws created to preserve peace. King Kamehameha Day is an annual celebration dedicated to this beloved leader. A number of eco-tour and hiking companies offer daily treks into Volcanoes National Park, as Naturalists and Hawaii Certified Guides lead the way on foot and on guided driving tours, allowing visitors to discover extinct craters, ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, lava tubes, steam vents, and the arid desert landscape of Kilauea in relative safety. While not always a guarantee (for safety reasons), this is one of the few places in the world that allows you to walk right up to a flow of molten lava!

Air tours abound on the island, offering a bird’s eye view of the awesome power of an erupting volcano. Small planes offer a quieter view from above while helicopter flights for most visitors are considered a must. Departures from Hilo, Waikoloa and Kona allow a variety of options and assure something for every activity level, age and budget. For the photographer, there are doors-off flights and tours including a landing within the park. Have a picnic lunch before exploring this remote area and getting safely close to the lava.

Not to be forgotten, Mauna Kea plays host to snowboarders, skiers and nightly stargazing tours. Most car rental companies prohibit driving on the road to the summit and it can be a bit scary for the novice; luckily, it’s not difficult to join a guided group outing.

Big Island Tourism & Leisure

While Kilauea may be the most well known attraction, there is certainly no shortage of things to do. With geographical diversity including vast, arid desert, lush, tropical rainforests, sandy beaches, and even snow-capped mountains, Hawaii Island is an adventure lover’s paradise! There are a number of boat and kayak tours heading out daily to places like Kealakekua Bay and Pawai Bay Marine Preserve, allowing visitors to experience gorgeous reef areas teeming with tropical fish and Hawaiian sea turtles. There are even a good number of family-owned companies that take small groups out to look for, and swim with Wild Dolphins; talk about connecting with nature!

LAVA FLOW ON THE BIG ISLAND

After years of long wait, the residents of the Big Island and the whole world is going to witness one of the world's most spectacular natural occurences--- the Kilauea Lava Flow. The slowly oozing flow is now close to crossing the former Highway 130, which is now an emergency access road. Residents from nearby subdivisions were able to get up to where the flow is. The lava flow is coming from the Kilauea Volcano, a volcano that has been active for the past 23 years.What's very interesting about this is viewers can actually see lava flowing since it is visible above ground as it moves through brush and across older lava flows. City Officials however, have been busy preparing a safer viewing area for those who are interested in seeing this rare but natural wonder.
