The Best Places to Retire in the West

I am pursuing my final career � and I am quite comfortable working a 40-hour schedule for the first time in my life. I take my time and pick my clients carefully.

I get to take a day off here and there for golf, and I travel around the western states every couple of months. Over the past two years I have been keeping an eye out for the perfect spot to retire in the Western US.

I now live in a small community near the Bay Area in Northern California. I've lived here for 20+ years, and it has been great. The Bay Area is vibrant, has a good climate, and is home to some of the most creative people on the planet. But it certainly isn't paradise.

It is an expensive place to live. The highways are congested. The boarders of the US are out of control and that has hit California hard. The government is dysfunctional, and we pay a premium for that. While we have good weather, it is great half the year and somewhat over-rated the other half. My business has changed over the past five years. I can do about 80% - 90% of it from anywhere. That's the beauty of information and communication technology.

Let me share with you what I have found as I looked for better working/ retirement locations in the western US.
- Portland, Oregon area; especially Southern Washington
- Prescott, Arizona
- Northern Baja, Mexico
- Hilo, the big island of Hawaii
- Boise, Idaho

Southern Washington: I recently visited a friend who built his dream house on a few acres in Southern Washington, about 30 minutes from Portland. His 2,500 square foot house cost about the same as a � acre lot in the Bay Area. He is within easy drive of a good airport and Oregon has no sales tax. He can explore the Cascades and reach ocean or skiing in a few hours. Yep � it rains a lot, but not as much as Seattle.

Prescott, Arizona: This gem is home to 30,000 people, who enjoy mountain vistas and a temperate, sunny, four-season climate thanks to its mile-high elevation. If you aren't real fussy, you can find a nice house for $350k. If you are a little fussy or want some land, expect to pay $500k or better. Prescott is an old, established town with historic buildings and strong family culture. It's true that absentee Californians have snapped up a good bit of the real estate up. But they have been are running around most of the west buying spare homes and putting them in the "bank" for future use

Northern Baja, Mexico: Don't write this one off too fast, especially if you are in So Cal. and want a second home near the beach. It is not as crazy as it sounds You can live near the beach in Rosarito and get an absolutely great ocean view or ocean front house for a fraction of the price of a house located two hours north in San Diego county. South of the Border property even has financing available from this side of the border.

Hilo Area on the Big Island: One of the best deals in the United States has been discovered and land prices are climbing rapidly, but guess what? Land in Hilo is still inexpensive. If you are looking for a slow pace, it doesn't get any slower than Hilo. This area is absolutely beautiful yet not a prime location for vacation resorts and condos. Condos on Kauai, Maui, and the other side of the big island run $500 - $750k, yet a Hilo acre lot can be purchased for $40 to $75k, and houses for $150k. If you want some privacy, like to garden, and have dreamed of building a hideaway on an tropical island, there is still time to do it in the USA. It rains almost daily in Hilo but showers are short and the 75 to 80 degrees temperatures makes the showers and lush green growth a real delight.

Boise is rated as the second best city to do business in the US by Forbes Magazine. It has a population of about 400,000, and median house prices around $165,000. Boise is an excellent gateway to the natural beauty of the Northern Rockies. For those of you not quite ready to hang it up, but looking for an interesting, affordable small city environment, Boise deserves your serious consideration.

Hurghada – the property hotspot in the heart of the Egyptian Riviera

The UK is no longer seen as a place to make substantial short-term gains on property by many and, as a result, major investors have moved their interest abroad. Recently, under-developed areas such as Croatia and Bulgaria have seen a lot of interest from many UK investors, and Dubai has seen massive inward investment to put it firmly on the property map.

But it is Egypt’s ‘Red Sea Riviera’ that is now emerging as one of the world’s tourist and property hot-spots. At its heart is the town of Hurghada, which is now becoming an established resort. As well as a massive increase in tourism in the area, there has also been a proportional increase in investment in residential and commercial property.

It is not just relatively low property prices and costs of development that make this area a potential goldmine for investors, it also benefits from a fantastic climate. The lowest average winter temperature on the Egyptian Red Sea Riviera is 23°C and the sea temperature is an ideal 19°C. All of this development is happening at a rather rapid rate. Until the late 1970s Hurghada was merely a remote Egyptian fishing village, where residents earned their living from fishing the Red Sea. Over the last 25 years, however, the town has developed into one of the Red Sea’s most popular resorts. Today, there are 45 hotels in Hurghada, many built by major multi-national chains, and most offering superior levels of comfort.

Claims made by Egyptian developers that quality beachfront property can be found available to buy for less than the price of a prestige car may sound rather far-fetched, but a cursory look at some of the online property sites appear to bear out at least some of their claims. Beachfront studio apartments at a new marina development were offered for sale off-plan at just short of £19,000, with some beautifully appointed 2-bedroom apartments priced at under £50,000.

However, that entire development was sold off-plan almost before the foundations were sunk, proving that, even if the UK property market is suffering a slump, interest in Egyptian Riviera property most certainly isn’t!

The Big Island of Hawaii

About 1,200 years ago, Polynesian voyagers navigated the Pacific Ocean paddling canoes, using the stars as their guide, and arrived on these rocky shores. Bringing with them foods like taro, chickens, pigs, bananas and coconut, fishing skills and knowledge of canoe building, these new settlers thrived. By 1779, when legendary explorer Captain James Cook arrived in the waters of Kealakekua Bay, the population of the island was about 80,000 strong!

Hawaii Island was the home of one of the most prominent figures in the history of the state, King Kamehameha the Great. Born around 1753, Kamehameha is considered one of Hawaii’s greatest leaders. By conquering all the islands and bringing them under one rule, it is believed that this great warrior was actually able to end the warring between the islands by uniting them under one rule with laws created to preserve peace. King Kamehameha Day is an annual celebration dedicated to this beloved leader. While celebrated state wide, the Big Island plays is considered the “most special place to pay tribute” to the great King.

The youngest of the Hawaiian island chains, the Big Island is also the largest. Already covering about 4038 square miles, about 2/3 of the land mass of the entire state of Hawaii, the island is growing daily, thanks to the eruptions Hawaii’s two active volcanoes, Mauna Loa and Kilauea. The summit at another of the Big Island’s volcanoes, Mauna Kea, reaches a staggering 13,796 feet, and is the tallest mountain in the world.

Kilauea volcano draws thousands of visitors from around the globe and is probably the biggest attraction on the island. A number of eco-tour and hiking companies offer daily treks into Volcanoes National Park, as Naturalists and Hawaii Certified Guides lead the way on foot and on guided driving tours, allowing visitors to discover extinct craters, ancient Hawaiian petroglyphs, lava tubes, steam vents, and the arid desert landscape of Kilauea in relative safety. While not always a guarantee (for safety reasons), this is one of the few places in the world that allows you to walk right up to a flow of molten lava!

Air tours abound on the island, offering a bird’s eye view of the awesome power of an erupting volcano. Small planes offer a quieter view from above while helicopter flights for most visitors are considered a must. Departures from Hilo, Waikoloa and Kona allow a variety of options and assure something for every activity level, age and budget. For the photographer, there are doors-off flights and tours including a landing within the park. Have a picnic lunch before exploring this remote area and getting safely close to the lava.

Not to be forgotten, Mauna Kea plays host to snowboarders, skiers and nightly stargazing tours. Most car rental companies prohibit driving on the road to the summit and it can be a bit scary for the novice; luckily, it’s not difficult to join a guided group outing.

Big Island Tourism & Leisure

While Kilauea may be the most well known attraction, there is certainly no shortage of things to do. With geographical diversity including vast, arid desert, lush, tropical rainforests, sandy beaches, and even snow-capped mountains, Hawaii Island is an adventure lover’s paradise! ATV and horseback tours offer panoramic views, waterfalls and historic trails while leisurely sightseeing tours explore the Hamakua Coast, Paniolo Country, and Waimea.

The island is still relatively young and does not offer a great many sandy beaches but the ones you’ll find are stunning. As in most of the state, the best beaches are usually found near resorts and are fairly easy to find; however, if you venture off the beaten path, a little leg work will reveal striking stretches of black sand at Punalu’u Beach and even green sands at Papakolea.

Snorkeling from shore is not the greatest, so visitors would do well to consider a guided snorkel tour. There are a number of boat and kayak tours heading out daily to places like Kealakekua Bay and Pawai Bay Marine Preserve, allowing visitors to experience gorgeous reef areas teeming with tropical fish and Hawaiian sea turtles. There are even a good number of family-owned companies that take small groups out to look for, and swim with Wild Dolphins; talk about connecting with nature!

LAVA FLOW ON THE BIG ISLAND

Hawaii - Island Culture Shines

Great concern has been rampant about the lack of "Hawaii" in the so-called "Hawaiian" activities, merchandise and demonstrations witnessed throughout the island's hotels. Such items like leis and bracelets being strung with shells from the Philippines or tropical print bags, dolls and pot holders bearing the status of "Made in China"---even many souvenirs sold to visitors in Hawaii are created in and sold from such places as Bali, Thailand.

As odd as it can be, much of what is offered as authentic "Hawaiian" arts and crafts is actually imported from other foreign countries and guests of the islands haven't the slightest clue!

As a result, a lot of time and energy has been spent on allowing the "real" Hawaiian culture to stand out and become noticed by all those millions of people who come to Hawaii annually. For much too long, the tendency was to push touristy trends like torch lighting ceremonies, Polynesian dancing revues and flashy hotels---all of which were ultimately lacking in substance when authentic "Hawaiian" cultural experiences were what was really desired.

In 1998, the Kauai Heritage Center of Hawaiian Culture and the Arts opened---a 1,200 square-foot facility with a purpose to educate and create mind awareness for appreciation and respect of the true "Hawaiian" culture. Exhibits in the Center focus on the Hawaiian quilts, hand-carved fishing tools, hula instruments and implements, as well as a vast array of mats, fans and baskets, to name just a few. Most of the artefacts making up the exhibits are treasured heirlooms belonging to Hawaiian families for decades.

The Center also instructs hands-on classes that probe and discuss all aspects of a specific subject, i.e., hula, leaf printing and the Hawaiian language. These sessions also cover lei making techniques along with the sharing of its protocols and customs that span the entire experience--- from the preparation of materials to the actual leis disposal.

Realizing that to preserve Hawaiian culture and perpetuate its message is a daunting undertaking, the Center's goal is not one of just providing an activity exercise but to share information and knowledge so that responsibility is assigned to the participant. Thus, programs are constantly in the planning stages, including work shops teaching cultural insights inspired and motivated by Hawaiian themes. The presenters are artists and practitioners specializing in their specific field of expertise.

Special permission was granted by the owners of the historic Coco Palms in Wailua, heavily damaged in Hurricane Iniki in 1992, to the students of the Center to sketch its structures and lagoons. More lectures will be presented on ancient places of worship and on these lagoons---which were first used as fish ponds by the Royalty.

The Center will also organize cultural excursions, like taking 5th-6th graders to learn about Hawaii's environment, it's native plants and about conservation. The group size will be limited to anywhere from 6 to 30 people because of the impact on the sacred cultural sites.

With the advent of new technologies and conveniences, many of today's Hawaiians have forgotten the value and wisdom of the "old ways". So, a comprehensive training program aimed at Hawaiian Islands' visitor industry---hotel employees and business organizations---commenced based on traditional Hawaiian values.

This training program offers 8 hours of instruction covering subjects on healing with herbs, sacred offerings, massage, music, proverbs and poetry.

Perpetuating the integrity of the Hawaiian culture is what the Center is all about. Its goal, in short, is to accomplish every- thing possible to keep Hawaii "Hawaiian". There is a constant vigil to correct false and inaccurate representations of Hawaiian practices. Both visitors and locals alike are encouraged to discover the "real" Hawaii and not fall victim to activities referred to as "traditional" when in fact, they are "gimmicks for amusement".

Oahu Hawaii, The Birthplace of Surfing, Still Shreds

Hawaii, especially the island of Oahu, has long been considered the birthplace of surfing. The first written description of he’e nalu - the Hawaiian term for surfing – is described in a journal entry of Captain James King in March 1779, three months after the death of Captain James Cook, credited with first discovering the Hawaiian Islands in 1778:

"Twenty or thirty of the natives, taking each a long narrow board, rounded at the ends, set out together from the shore. Their first object is to place themselves on the summit of the largest surge, by which they are driven along with amazing rapidity toward the shore."

The Ancient Hawaiian Tradition of Surfing


Surfing permeated every aspect of Hawaiian society, including social structure, myth and religion. Native Hawaiians surfed on long, hardwood boards lying down, sitting or standing. Hawaiians left older, more picturesque evidence of their sport in the form of petroglyphs of surfers carved into the lava rock, and chants that tell the stories of great surfing feats, some dating to 1500.
As an integral part of traditional Hawaiian culture, surfing was included in the code of kapu (taboos) that regulated all social interaction in prehistoric Hawaii. The Kapu system maintained a society that was stratified into royal and common classes. These taboos extended into the surf zone, specifying beaches and reefs where the ali’i (chiefs) surfed, and those where the maka ai nana (commoners) were allowed.

The Death of Surfing


After the arrival of Christian missionaries in the 1820s, who imposed a work and puritanical ethic surfing, along with hula and other “play” activities faded from Hawaiian culture. With the help of converted Hawaiian Queen Ka’ahumanu (Kamehameha the Great’s favorite wife), the ancient kapu system was overturned and the beaches and waves were freed to all – but there was no one left to surf them for over 150 years.

The Rebirth of Surfing


At the turn of the 20th century, surfing underwent a renaissance, thanks to 3 men – none of who was Hawaiian. Surfer George Freeth began amazing visitors with his surfing stunts on the waves of Oahu’s Waikiki Beach. About the same time, the writings of author Jack London exposed the sport to an international audience. Alexander Hume Ford helped establish the Outrigger Canoe Club on Waikiki, the first modern club dedicated to the perpetuation of wave riding. Freeth was also brought surfing to California, when he surfed in an exhibition at Redondo Beach in 1907.
Duke Paoa Kahanamoku, a Waikiki beach boy and Olympic swimming champion, was already famous as a surfer and world-record holder in the 100-meter freestyle, when he helped found the Hui Nalu Club in Waikiki. Duke took the sport of surfing to Australia when he was invited to surf in Sydney in 1912.

By the 1960s, especially in the U.S - new materials, new technologies and new board design created a renewed swell of interest in the ancient Hawaiian sport and surfing began to move into popular culture in the U.S. establishing its own genre of music culminating in The Beach Boys, and various popular movies including Gidget and Endless Summer. It has become a multi-billion dollar worldwide industry that includes equipment, accessories, surf wear, surfing, books magazines, films, music and adventure vacations.

Oahu’s Big Wave Competition


The Quiksilver, Big Wave Invitational In Memory of Eddie Aikau, takes place each winter at Waimea Bay on the North Shore of Oahu. Created in 1985 to honor legendary Hawaiian waterman Eddie Aikau, this event gathers 24 of the most accomplished paddle-in big wave riders from around the world. "The Eddie," as it is also known, spans up to 3 months - waiting for ideal, 30-foot plus waves. The competition itself occurs on a single day when conditions are just perfect.

Horseback and Shark Tour Activities in Hawaii

I had the fortunate opportunity to be in Hawaii in the summer of 2007 when the weather was absolutely beautiful for 3 straight months while we took a horseback tour, jumped in a shark cage and learned how to surf. It was my boyfriend and my sister and her boyfriend that found ourselves on the beautiful island of Oahu for one week before we left for the Big Island of Hawaii.

So you are probably thinking what young folks like us might end up doing on our Hawaiian vacation right? Well, let me tell you that we did not have one restful moment at all. We did a lot of our activities on the north shore where every outdoor activity imaginable can be found.

Our first activity was the shark tour where the boat took us 5 miles out to sea and dropped a cage in the water for us to enter like sitting ducks while 10 foot sharks came looking for a meal. My suggestion would be to go on an empty stomach because the ride out is pretty rough.

Now among all of the exciting Hawaii activities the ocean seems to be the sure bets but one of my more memorable activities was the Horseback riding tour that we took in the mountains along the North Shore with Happy Trails Hawaii. This Horse ride tour got my approval once we came up and around a little valley to be exposed to the beautiful and serene sight of Hawaii's North Shore coast. It was a sight to die for and me and my horse named "Oahu" savored the moment.

Among the many things to do while on your Hawaii vacation I would recommend the horseback tour on the North Shore and just about any activity in the ocean, hey you are in paradies so why not take advantage of Hawaii Activities!

Traveling To and Around Hawaii, A First-Time Visitor's Primer

Six different islands in Hawaii are open to tourism. Most first-timers planning a trip to one or more than one island have numerous questions relating to where exactly to go and how exactly to get there. This primer will answer those questions.

All interisland flights are through Hawaiian Airlines, Aloha Airlines, or Island Air. Best prices will usually be through the website or through your mainland flight company.

Oahu is the hub of Hawaii transportation. Most mainland and International flights will fly into the Honolulu International Airport (HNL). Travelers heading on to another island may have to deplane and get on an interisland flight to reach their final destination. The airport is located on the outskirts of Honolulu, about a 20 minute drive to Waikiki, and about a 45 minute drive to the North Shore. There are no ferries from Oahu to any other island.

Maui has three airports. The major airport is Kahalui Airport (OGG) which allows direct flights from the West coast of the U.S. mainland. The drive from the airport to Kihei or Wailea is less than half an hour, but can take an hour to Lahaina or Kaanapali. Much closer to the Lahaina area is Kapalua Airport (JHM) but you can only fly there from Honolulu. Hana (HNM) also has an airport if you don't want to drive, but you'll be taking a very small plane. Check with Pacific Wings. You can normally find day ferries from Maui to Lanai and Molokai.

The Big Island (named Hawaii, but called the Big Island to avoid confusion) has two airports, Hilo International Airport (ITO), and Keahole Airport (KOA). These two airports are a 2.5 hour drive from each other. Hilo is closest to Honokaa, Kapoho, and Volcano. Keahole is in Kailua-Kona which is closest to all of Kona, Puako, Kohala, Waikoloa, and Waimea. There are direct flights from the mainland only to Keahole. There are no ferries from the Big Island to any other island.

Kauai has one airport, Lihue Airport (LIH), in Lihue, and you can find direct flights from the mainland on some carriers. Lihue is about halfway to everything on the island - but a bit closer to Poipu than Princeville. There are no ferrys from Kauai to any other island.

Molokai has one airport, Molokai Airport (MKK) in central Molokai. You will probably have to take a small airplane in, usually no bigger than a 20 seater. Island Air will fly you in from Honolulu or Kahului. Small commercial boats will ferry you from Maui to Molokai.

Lanai has one airport, Lanai Airport (LNY), near Lanai City. Lanai airport also only accepts small airplanes. Island Air will fly you in from Honolulu. Small commercial boats will ferry you from Maui to Molokai.

By 2007 Hawaii Super Ferry should be operating between all the islands and will hopefully revolutionize our current expensive and inefficient interisland travel systems. Until then, book your flight online and early.

Surfboard design innovations

Surfing has its roots in the Polynesia. When explorers such as Captain Cook first happened on previously undiscovered Polynesian islands in the 18th century, they were often surprised to find the natives seemingly walking on water, riding waves with different crafts raging from huge wooden boards to small planks and nothing at all. In Hawaii, where surfing was common, it was strictly regulated by a system of governance called Btapu. Some breaks were reserved for the chiefs who generally used huge boards to ride the waves. This system of governance also determined the way each surfboard needs to be made. An each surfboard determined the status of the rider's board.

When the Hawaiian population was almost killed by disease and foreign influence in the 19th century, the practice of surfing declined, and almost died out entirely. However, as Hawaii came to be seen as an attractive vacation destination in the beginning of the 20th century, surfing experienced a sort of rebirth, lead by the Olympic swimmer Duke Kahanamoku and the Waikiki Beach Boys. Surfing broke in as part of Hawaii's image as a tropical paradise. Kanahanamoku became a kind of ambassador for surfing, introducing it to both coasts of the US as well as Australia between 1910 and 1920. Surfing did not immediately blossom in these new locations, however, because of their cold weather and the heavy and unhandy nature of the old wooden boards. It would take many years and technical innovations before surfing became popular worldwide.

The first great innovation was the addition of the fin to the underside of the surfboard. The fin increased the surfboard's stability and made it more maneuverable. In the 1940s, Californian Bob Simmons began to experiment with new shapes and design materials for surfboards, and came up with the modern foam and fiberglass construction that is the basis for surfboard design today. The new materials made surfboards lighter, cheaper, and more accessible. The advent of the wetsuit around this time made temperate coastlines much more attractive for surfing and this greater accessibly helped to facilitate surfings' great boom in the 1960's, when different surfing movies and bands like The Beach Boys, Bel-airs, and Surfers, helped surfing, and the accompanying lifestyle present its way into America's culture.

The next great revolution was the short board revolution of the late 1960s, when some surfers started experimenting with surfboards radically shorter and more maneuverable than before. This opened up a whole new world of faster, steeper breaks which the older boards were unable to handle. The 1970s saw the birth of the professional surfing world tour, which helped to further popularize surfing around the world. The final revolution in surfboard design took place in the early 1980s, the three finned surfboard, which further increased board speed and maneuverability.

Today surfing continues to increase in popularity and is spreading to the whole globe.

Wow! Big Island Scuba Diving; Honounou Hawaii's Kona Coast

Wow! What a wonderful place for snorkeling and scuba diving the Big Island of Hawaii is, Kona received the moniker the Gold Coast as you would look in the water and it would be shimmering gold with the tremendous schools of yellow tang, even today you can see big schools of these fish. Hawaii is very unique in that 25% of the fish that are here are only found here. It is not uncommon to count over 150 different spices of fish at Honounou. Turtles, dolphins and manta rays are routinely spotted by Big Island Hawaii scuba divers & snorkels at Honounou.

Boat Dives are the norm in Hawaii, but an exception is the famous 2 step at Honounou or the City of Refuge which has over 150 different species of fish. It is not uncommon to see turtles as they cruise along eating the grasses and mosses that grow along the shore. Picasso trigger fish one of the most colorful reef fish also known as lagoon trigger fish are found on he left side, if you are looking out towards the deep in around 15 feet of water, so even snorklers can se them. You can find frog fish that look like rocks when they get older and stone fish that look like stones, hence the name, but you need to be careful as the stone fish have poisonous spines.

Something else that you might not want to play with would be the eels they are not aggressive but their favorite food is octopus and they have bad vision, so your hand will look quite appetizing to them. There are many different types here from dwarf eels to giant morays, yellow & white mouths and green head morays are all fairly common. Another great find here is the very hard to spot leaf scorpions which look like leafs but have the same type of eyes as the stone fish, which look like what I would guess the monolith called TMA from 2001 a Space Odyssey would look like when you peered in except the difference here is that if Dave looked in he would say instead “Wow its full of fish”!

Waikiki Scuba Diving Oahu Hawaii - Have Fun Getting Wet in Waikiki!

Waikiki on The Island of Oahu in Hawaii is a great place to go to do self directed scuba diving. Hawaii has so many different types of scuba diving and Waikiki has almost every type within 1 hour. You have wreck dives off Diamond Head, Shore Dives at Electric beach, Portlock with its large drop in. Lava tubes up at Sharks Cove, and tons of fish at Hanama Bay, including some pelages, and if you have your own scuba diving equipment it can be quite inexpensive. Even if you rent gear You can shore dive allot of different spots near Waikiki like Hanama Bay which basically is a giant aquarium filled with all sorts of beautiful fish. They have a tram that takes you down and back up. There is a lot of gear lugging to do this dive, but worth it, as it is one of the best dives in Hawaii. Electric Beach up at the power plant on the west side towards Makaha, has Giant turtles which can be found under the ledges hiding from the sharks, that you will most likely never see. 3 Tables, Sharks Cove, Fire Station and Halaiwa Trench make the north shore of Oahu a beach divers Mecca, when the surf is down dude! If the waves are up maybe go to Magic Beach, inside the wall they do a lot of scuba diving classes, and outside has some very nice reef. Just down the road you can also do the pipe, but you will defiantly need someone to show you this site and it has a long kick out to the end and maybe some strong currents.

Scuba Diving Equipment Buy and Rent

You can rent scuba diving equipment, at Ocean Concepts in Honolulu at Sport Authority on Ward Av, Deep Ecology on the North Shore, and Aarons Dive in Kaneohe Kailua side. Most of these shops offer gear for sale as well and they will help you to buy scuba diving equipment. If you are going to buy scuba diving gear, it makes allot of sense to get professional guidance, to make sure that you buy the right scuba diving equipment, for the types of diving you will normally do, and to make sure that the fit, and the comfort are right for you.

If you are doing self directed dives make sure that you have a surface marker - safety sausage and a whistle or air horn. I usually keep a dive light as well to signal at night. I also make sure that I have a snorkel, you never when you might get caught by a storm, you do get caught you will be grateful that you have it. Always make sure that you file a dive plan with a responsible friend, so someone knows to activate Emergency Medical Support System (911) if you don’t show up. Have fun getting wet in Waikiki.

No matter your skill level there are days when the surf accommodates to all levels but one thing is sure you must always use caution and never jump into the water if you are uncertain of the conditions.
